EIAgen Prolactin

brief description

Human prolactin (hPRL) is a single chain polypeptide hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. It has a molecular weight of approximately 23000 Dalton and a structure similar to that of growth hormone (also secreted by the pituitary gland) and human placental lactogen. Prolactin synthesis and secretion is under the direct control of the hypothalamus. This exerts a predominantly inhibitory influence via prolactin-inhibiting factor (PIF) which is thought to be primarily dopamine or a dopamine-related substance. A prolactin-releasing factor is also thought to exist but its exact nature is uncertain; however, Thyrotrophin Releasing Hormone (TRH) is known to have a stimulatory effect upon prolactin secretion. Prolactin release may also be initiated by normal suckling and mechanical breast stimulation and elevated levels are therefore observed during pregnancy and the post partum-lactation period. Other physiological states associated with elevated prolactin levels include physical and emotional stress, sleep and hypoglycaemia.

intended use

EIAgen Prolactin is a direct solid phase enzyme immunoassay for the quantitative measurement of prolactin in human serum.
