Mumps is a frequent childhood disease which is normally diagnosed on the basis of the parotitis which constitutes the presenting symptom. However, patients presenting with the most common complications, i.e. orchitis, meningitis or meningoencephalitis, without inflammation of the salivary glands, may require confirmation of the infection by serological methods.
