Respiratory Syncitial Virus

brief description

Respiratory syncitial virus is a worldwide endemic Pneumovirus of the Paramyxoviridae family ; epidemics occur every year from January to March. RSV is the most common and most important cause of pneumonia and bronchiolitis in infants and young children. The endemic infection rate is almost 100% by 4 years of age. Transmission is by droplet, contact and aerosol infection. After an incubation period of about 4 days the upper respiratory tract is affected, spreading more seriously to the lower airways where inflammation of the bronchioles is frequently observed. The danger of spreading this highly contagious disease is great since the virus is shed for between 5 days and 3 weeks. While the infection may produce severe respiratory illness in young children e.g. high fever, rhinitis, bronchiolitis, croup and pneumonia, in adults the illness is comparatively mild (symptoms of a ‘common cold'). Production of secretory IgA limits the RS virus locally. Occasionally in the elderly pneumonia and other severe respiratory illness may occur.
