Borrelia Burgdorferi

brief description

Bacterium belonging to the group of Spirochaetes and is the cause of Lyme disease, carried by ticks. In Europe the hard-shelled tick which carries Lyme disease is Ixodes ricinus. Lyme disease is a multi-system disease, manifested in three stages and can occur in different organs and either separately or in a combination of symptoms. Stage I: (Early): Appears after some days or a few weeks in the form of erythema migrans(EM) and the lymphadenosis benigna cutis. Stage II: Becomes clinically apparent after some weeks or months. Cardiological complications as well as neurological disease e.g. meningitis or encephalitis may occur. Stage III: (Late): Complications may occur from one to many years after infection, including arthritis, chronic encephalitis and acrodermatis athrophicans.
