brief description

Human growth hormone (hGH) is a polypeptide at 191 amino acids (molecular weight of approximately 22,000 Dalton) synthesized in the somatotroph cells of the anterior pituitary. hGH is the principal regulator of body growth and has a number of direct metabolic and cellular effects in addition to acting indirectly by inducing the release of somatomedins (insulin-like growth factors). The secretion of hGH is pulsatile and is under complex neurogenic, metabolic and hormonal control. Factors which increase hGH secretion include stress, exercise, sleep, dopamine, noradrenaline (a-adrenergic agonists),serotonin, hypoglycemia, armino acids and rising fatty acid levels. hGH release is inhibited by emotional deprivation, ß-adrenegic agonists, dopamine and serotonin antagonists, hyperglycemia, falling fatty acid levels and somatomedin C (IGF-1).
