EIAgen Rubella IgG Avidity

brief description

Rubella virus causes a very common infectious disease in humans, accompanied by a typical diffused rash. The course of the illness is generally short and without complications. However, it is harmful for the fetus if contracted during pregnancy, because the virus is teratogenic and may cause very serious malformations especially during the first month of pregnancy. It is therefore essential to determine the patient's state of immunity before the start of pregnancy, if possible, in order to perform vaccination or, if this is impossible, to monitor the course of the pregnancy to observe whether seroconversion occurs.

Sometimes it is not sufficient to test for IgM antibodies, as the presence of this class may be due to the persistence of IgM or asymptomatic reinfection by Rubella, without risk for the fetus.

For this reason it is useful to assay the avidity of the IgG antibodies, in as far as it has been demonstrated that avidity is low in the acute phase of infection and increases over a period of time. The presence of low avidity antibodies is therefore an indication of a recent or current infection. The avidity of IgG antibodies in the serum can be assayed with this ELISA kit.
